How We Fight Inflammation

Inflammation has become a bit of a buzzword in the wellness community. But outside of a visibly swollen joint, what is it? And how do we combat its negative effects? At Kosak Chiropractic, Dr. Michael Wilson and the rest of our team want to arm you with the knowledge you need to best take care of your body, as well as help you formulate an action plan. Learn more about how we fight inflammation with our patients in Fairfield, CA below.

What is inflammation?

Before we talk about fighting it, let’s break down what it is. In general, inflammation is actually the body’s natural healing response to fight disease, cure infection, or reduce other damage. Acute inflammation works by rushing fluids, blood, and other nutrients to an affected area. However, it’s designed to subside when the threat is dealt with, and when that doesn’t happen, we enter the realm of chronic inflammation

Chronic inflammation, in contrast, happens when the “something is wrong” signal remains on and the body doesn’t have a chance to recover. Think of it like going out on a sunny day at the beach without sunscreen - for a little bit, the sun feels nice and warm against your skin, and you’re soaking up vitamin D. But if you stay out too long, you’ll get a sunburn, your cancer risk increases, and it just gets worse and worse.

What causes inflammation?

Inflammation can be caused by:

  • Sports Injury
  • Overuse injuries such as tendinitis
  • Auto-accidents
  • Intense exercise
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Changes in pressure (flying on a plane, for example)
  • Certain foods or diet
  • Hormonal changes
  • …and more.

Many of our patients in Fairfield, CA come to see us for sports/exercise-related injuries, auto accidents, or overuse-related issues, but chiropractic care can help fight all types of inflammation.

How we fight inflammation

The key to fighting inflammation is to keep that excess fluid moving and provide adequate opportunity to recover. Sometimes, that’s as simple as wearing compression garments, and other times it involves a holistic approach to improving diet, reducing stress, and therapeutic exercise. Our various types of massage and hydrotherapy are great options for both! However, as each individual’s needs vary, it’s best to speak with your chiropractor about the right treatment plan for you.
